Tributes have been paid to the boy who died after being shot on a farm in Cumbria

Eight-year-old Jay Cartmell from Frizington suffered head and face injuries on land near Warcop.

He was a youth player for Whitehaven Miners FC who've posted on social media saying 'RIP wee man #lanternforlife'.

Emergency services were called at around 2.50pm on Saturday to the property.

A firearm was secured at the scene by police and the youngster was taken by air ambulance to hospital where he died overnight.

A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

He was later bailed as police continued their investigations.

Cumbria Police urged any witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said:

"As officers continue with their inquiries into this incident, they are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward.

The Whitehaven and Workington MP Josh MacAlister said on his X account;

"This is an absolutely tragic and heartbreaking loss of such a young life.

"I know that our whole community will have Jay’s family in our thoughts."
