Olly Alexander's mum says she's "so excited" her son is representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden next year.

Vicki Thornton, who is the co-founder of Coleford Music Festival in the Forest of Dean, said she struggled to keep the news quiet before the official announcement on Saturday.

"When he told me I screamed, screamed the roof off" Vicki said.

"I think it's just amazing, it's so Olly this whole thing."

The Years and Years star revealed the news during the final of Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday.

"I love Eurovision so much, it's a dream come true," Olly told Claudia Winkleman. "I'm just so, so excited."

Vicki says Olly's always been a big music fan.

"We used to watch when he was growing up and we'd spend all night dancing and singing," she said. It's just so exciting, I'm so happy for him."

She says she can't reveal anything about his performance yet, but promises it will be "mega."

"He's just an extraordinary young man and proud doesn't even cover how I feel."

The Eurovision song contest will take place in Malmo in Sweden in May 2024.
