A man and a woman have died and three people, including a child, were taken to hospital following a “suspicious” explosion at a house in Bristol.

Avon and Somerset Police declared a major incident after the explosion at an address in Sterncourt Road at around 6.30am on Sunday.

Officers are also carrying out enquiries at a property in Speedwell which is linked to the man who died.

The cause of the explosion is being treated as suspicious, the force said, but not as a suspected terrorist event.

Superintendent Matt Ebbs told reporters in an update on Sunday afternoon: “A woman and a man have died at the address and we’re treating the explosion as suspicious.

“Three people, a man, a woman and a child, were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.”
