Kidderminster mum excited for first Mother's Day after suffering four miscarriages

A first-time mum who lives in Kidderminster has described getting to celebrate her first Mother's Day as a 'magical experience'.
34-year-old Laura Kane and her partner Aaron Reynolds, welcomed their son William who's now eight-months-old into the world last June, after previously miscarrying four babies in the space of a year.
Laura first fell pregnant in April 2021, but had a missed miscarriage, where the body doesn't realise the pregnancy has been lost, at seven to eight weeks.
"When we first found out I was pregnant, we were both really excited and started planning for the baby," Laura said.
"We went for a scan at around six weeks and they said that baby was forming perfectly, and there was no complications from what they could see at that time.
"At around about 11 weeks, just before my 12 week scan, I started to get some bleeding, so they brought my 12 week scan a week forward.
"During that scan they said that baby no longer had a heartbeat and that it stopped growing at around seven to eight weeks, and said that I'd suffered something called a missed miscarriage, we were just devastated."
She then fell pregnant again in October that year, but this time she suffered an ectopic pregnancy, where the pregnancy occurs outside the womb.
"I was having some pains in one of my sides, and during the first pregnancy I was told that I had a cyst, so I though the pain had something to do with the cyst, but I went to the doctors and they they told me that I was pregnant," Laura said
"Me and my partner were over the moon to hear the news again, but the doctors said that because I was experiencing pain I would have to go for a scan.
"We went to the hospital, and I had a scan, which was where we were told that it was an ectopic pregnancy, and we were just absolutely heartbroken by the loss."
In May 2022 she became pregnant with twins, but after one of them did not develop early on, Laura then had a missed miscarriage at eight weeks, losing the other baby.
"This time I went and had an early scan and was told that I was carrying twins," Laura said.
"We would then have to go for regular scans, and that's when we found out that the first twin didn't develop, which again was hard for us to take, but we had to be strong and I had another baby that we were fighting for.
"After going for more scans, we then found that I had missed miscarried the second twin, and that's when I decided to start researching reoccurring miscarriages."
Laura came across Tommy's, the UK's largest pregnancy and baby loss charity, where she eventually managed to get a referral from her doctor to go on their waiting list for tests.
In October 2022 she unexpectedly fell pregnant, and Tommy's then supported her and her partner through the initial first 12 weeks of the pregnancy.
"At this stage, after losing four babies, we were very nervous," she said.
"As soon as I found out, I got in touch with Tommy's and said I know that I'm on your waiting list, however, I've found out I'm pregnant, and they acted really quickly and got me straight into their pregnancy area.
"They advised me to speak to my doctor and see if they could put me on progesterone pessaries because it could help me, but my doctors said that I would have to treat this fifth pregnancy as a normal one until they could see a heartbeat.
"Tommy's managed to do an early scan and confirm the heartbeat, which then meant I ended up going back to my doctors and getting the progesterone pessaries that I needed."
After 12 weeks, Tommy's discharged Laura, but kept her under consultant care, where they found her cervix was shortening, which could've led to a miscarriage.
Once the problem was sorted, Laura then went onto give birth to her baby boy William in June 2023.
"When he was was lifted up and put on to me, I just sobbed my eye out," Laura said when she got to hold her baby for the first time.
"It was just a surreal moment, and the moment I've been waiting for, for so long, and he was finally here in my arms, and it was just magical.
"We took a while to get to where we are, but we're here now and he's a little darling."
Laura says the support that Tommy's gave her throughout the pregnancy was amazing, and that she can never thank them enough.
Despite being discharged, they stayed in contact with her throughout the rest of the pregnancy, answering any problems or issues she had.
"I truly believe if it wasn't for Tommy's, then we wouldn't have our baby here today," she said.
"The work that they do is just phenomenal, even if it's the if it was just reassurance for me, they were just incredible.
"This first Mother's Day will be magical, and we can now start to build all these unforgettable moments together as a family, but I'll never also forget my other four babies as well."
