The bank holidays in 2024 return to normal, after we had a bonus day off last year because of the King's Coronation.

We do get an additional day this year as it's a leap year, unfortunately, Thursday 29th February is not a bank holiday.

Here are exactly when the bank holidays will be in England and Wales:

When are all the bank holidays in 2024?

Monday 1st January, New Year’s Day

The first day of 2024 falls on a Monday.

Friday 29th March, Good Friday

Good Friday, a traditional bank holiday for the UK, falls on 20th March and is the start of a four-day weekend. Pictured is the tradition of pilgrims carrying crosses to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland.

Monday 1st April, Easter Monday

Easter Monday is the last day of the four-day weekend. In some places, during the Easter holidays, there are egg rolling competitions, Easter bonnet parades, and even displays of traditional Morris dancing.

Monday 6th May, Early May bank holiday

This holiday most likely originated as a Roman festival honouring the start of the summer season. In more recent times, May Day has been celebrated as a day to campaign for and celebrate workers' rights. This year the May Day bank holiday falls on Monday 6th May.

Monday 27th May, Spring bank holiday

The May Spring Bank Holiday will be on Monday 27th May to create a three-day weekend.

Monday 26th August, Summer bank holiday

The last Monday of August is a bank holiday in England and Wales as summer ends and autumn begins. The Notting Hill Carnival in London is also held over the last weekend of August. It is thought to be the second-largest street carnival in the world.

25th December, Christmas Day

Christmas Day will fall on a Wednesday in 2024 so the 25th December will be a bank holiday.

Thursday 26th December, Boxing Day

For many Boxing Day is a time to recover from the excesses of Christmas Day and spend time with friends and family. Though for many it's also the time to flock to the post-Christmas sales that often begin on Boxing Day! This year the day itself (26th) will be a bank holiday.
