Birmingham City Council handed over the revamped venue for the 2022 Games

The Alexander Stadium has been handed over by Birmingham City Council to Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The Council oversaw a £72 million revamp of the stadium and it will play an integral role in the summer games, which will be the biggest event in the city’s history.
In addition to hosting sporting events during the Commonwealth Games, the Alexander Stadium will host the Games opening and closing ceremonies. Furthermore, the stadium will also host the Para-athletics competition.
Approval to upgrade the stadium was received back in February 2020 and despite the coronavirus pandemic, the project came in on budget and on schedule.
Home of British Athletics
The Alexander Stadium will have a capacity of 30,000 people during the summer games. Post-games, the stadium will be reduced to 18,000 seats, which will become the focal point for sports, health, and community activity in Perry Barr.
In addition to hosting the Commonwealth Games, the stadium will once again act as a ‘home for British athletics.’
The Leader of Birmingham City Council, Cllr Ian Ward said: “The new-look Alexander Stadium is absolutely stunning and it's testament to the vision and hard work of everyone involved in this project that it has already been hailed as the best athletics stadium in the country.
“Birmingham has a venue to be truly proud of and we look forward to welcoming athletes, coaches and spectators for what I am confident will be an unforgettable Commonwealth Games.”
The opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games is on July 28th with the closing ceremony being on August 8th 2022. Para athletics starts August 2nd through August 7th 2022.
