Ronny Deila Admits Demands Are Very High At Celtic After Thrashing Dundee United
Ronny Deila spoke of the enormous pressure at Celtic following their 5-0 thumping of Dundee United at Parkhead.
Ronny Deila spoke of the enormous pressure at Celtic following their 5-0 thumping of Dundee United at Parkhead.
The Norwegian boss and his players were heavily criticised from all quarters after their 3-1 defeat to Molde in the Europa League on Thursday night left them bottom of Group A but returned to domestic duties with a bang.
A double from Kris Commons, one from the spot, and counters from Leigh Griffiths and Dedryck Boyata before a late deflected strike from skipper Scott Brown took the Hoops four points ahead of Aberdeen at the top of the Premiership.
The Dons, who were five points ahead at one stage last month, have not won in four league matches and travel to Parkhead next week.
Asked if his players do not get enough credit for the good things they do, just picked on when things do not go well, Deila said: It's hard at Celtic.
When you are a successful club, winning trophies - we have done it (won the title) four times and hopefully (will) do it a fifth time this year - and winning cups then everybody wants you down except the Celtic fans and you get everything thrown at you.
When you have done a lot of good things the demands get very, very high and that is how it is at clubs like this.
Some weeks ago we had a lot of critics because we were five points behind and now we've suddenly turned it around in a month.
That is something we should be proud of.
And if you look around you, now it is Aberdeen having troubles but it's not the same pressure as it is at Celtic.
But that's how it is here and everybody has to cope with it.
I'm very happy and pleased with the performance today. You need character to do what we did and they really showed it.''
Commons, who issued a public apology for throwing a tantrum after being substituted in Norway, this time gave Deila a hug after being replaced by Tomas Rogic, which the Norwegian responded to in a light-hearted way.
I like hugs so that's a positive,'' he said.
He was good together with the team today. He scored one really good goal and he's brilliant at penalties so I'm happy for him and for the whole team.
I think everybody understands that there's more big games coming this week and we have to save players when we can.''
Deila played down the absence of the 'Ronny Roar' - his usual fist-pumping celebration with the fans after victories.
I haven't done it every time,'' he said.
Celtic Park is a big stadium to go round and today I didn't feel for it.
I just didn't feel like it today but it will come back.''
United remain five points adrift of Partick Thistle at the bottom of the table after 12 matches.
Mixu Paatelainen, after only his second match in charge following a 1-0 defeat by Hearts, was scathing of his side's performance and described the afternoon as a painful experience''.
The former United striker said: We were rubbish with a capital R.
You can set out your tactics and do whatever you want on the training ground but if you don't do your basic fundamentals right, everything goes in the rubbish bin.
And that is what happened today.
After that I am not surprised that Dundee United are bottom of the league at the moment because we don't do things right.
We made some mistakes last week but I thought we were okay. Today we were horrendous. It was a painful experience.
The worrying thing is that, for some of our players the message doesn't go in, no matter how clearly you put it across to them.
It is not something that we will fix in the next two or three weeks. It is going to be a long autumn and winter for us.''
