Dundee manager Paul Hartley admitted his players won ugly after overcoming Inverness to move into seventh place in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Hartley, whose side prevailed through goals from Craig Wighton and Kostadin Gadzhalov, was full of praise for the work rate of his side as they earned a 2-1 success.

He said: We're very happy because I didn't think we played great. I'm happy with the team , the effort and the attitude. It was first class.

Sometimes you have to win ugly and this was one such occasion. I think that was an ugly kind of win for us.

We're really pleased with another three points at home and we've got a run of games coming up where we'll take it one game at a time.

We've moved off the bottom which is important for us in terms of the confidence.''

Teenager Wighton was paired in attack with Marcus Haber and opened the scoring in style after 25 minutes, with a curling finish beyond Owain Fon Williams after running through to meet Tom Hateley's pass.

Wighton has been doing that for probably the last month,'' Hartley said. He's made a huge impact alongside Haber up front.

His goal was class. He showed great maturity. He's got that ability about him but he's working hard off the ball also.

We've been patient with him and he's bulked up. There's been a lot of expectation on his young shoulders because he's got natural talent.

He's got the jersey now and hopefully he can keep it.'' Inverness manager Richie Foran refused to slate his Inverness players for their Dens Park defeat.

Foran said: That was just unbelievable. It was our best performance of the season.

I actually went round the dressing room and shook all their hands after the game.

We had all the possession and dominated from start to finish but still lost a game of football.

We had so many chances to score and could have had four or five today and then they go and score against the run of play.

I've told the lads I'm delighted with all their performances but not to take it the wrong way - I'm obviously not happy with the result or the first goal against us.''
