Skipper Stephen McManus has ended speculation over his Motherwell future by agreeing a fresh two-year deal.

The veteran defender's Fir Park contract was due to expire this summer and he had been warned by boss Mark McGhee he would have to take a pay cut to stay on.

But the 33-year-old former Scotland international has come to an agreement with the Steelmen and will lead out the Lanarkshire side next term.

The former Celtic, Middlesbrough and Bristol City defender joined 'Well in 2013 and has gone on to play 124 games in three seasons, scoring five goals.

Speaking to motherwellfc.co.uk, McManus said: "I'm delighted to be staying at Motherwell as I have thoroughly enjoyed my three years at the club.

"I enjoy the coaching and the people around the place are great. I'm looking forward to hopefully what will be another successful two years."

McGhee added: "Stephen has been excellent and we're extremely pleased he has agreed to stay with us, as we know he had offers from elsewhere.

"I firmly believe we were able to develop some of the talented younger players like Ben Hall because of his and the other experienced lads' influence.

"He has the knowledge and ability and will continue to be a huge asset for us. I look forward to working with him again in the coming seasons."
