Motherwell hope to overturn the red card shown to skipper Keith Lasley during Saturday's Premiership defeat at Aberdeen.

The veteran Fir Park midfielder was sent off in the closing stages of his side's 4-1 Pittodrie defeat after sliding in on Kenny McLean.

Referee Bobby Madden flashed a straight red at the 36-year-old but only after changing his mind after first pulling his yellow card from his pocket.

Now Well hope the official's indecision will boost their case after submitting an appeal.

The Scottish Football Association have notified the club that a hearing will take place a week on Thursday.

Boss Mark McGhee said: "Having watched it back several times, I thought it was more of a tired, mistimed tackle, rather than one that was reckless, violent or with intent to hurt the opponent.

"There was another tackle earlier in the game that was fairly similar in many ways, that resulted in a booking, which is why I was surprised at the red card.

"Obviously Bobby, who I thought had a good game overall, had the yellow in his hand and he's changed his mind, which he's perfectly entitled to do, but I think his initial gut reaction to the challenge was the correct one."
