Motherwell manager Mark McGhee has given James McFadden an open offer to stay at Fir Park for the rest of the season.

McFadden's short-term deal expired before Motherwell's 1-0 defeat by Partick Thistle on Tuesday night.

The 32-year-old has been aiming to seal a switch to the United States but a trial spell with Philadelphia Union has not led to a deal.

McGhee said: "The offer is on the table for James, James knows the situation. If he goes to America we will wish him luck, if he doesn't then he's welcome to stay.''

Motherwell signed Morgaro Gomis on loan from Hearts on deadline day, the midfielder coming off the bench for the final half hour at Firhill, but McGhee was frustrated in his attempts to seal more signings.

However, he will not sign any players just to increase the numbers having cut down a bloated squad during January.

"We will have a look at one or two who are free agents and we will see but we are not desperately rushing around trying to do that,'' he said.
