Kenny Miller urges Barrie McKay to stick to the wings

Kenny Miller reckons Barrie McKay deserves his Scotland call-up after watching him soar for Rangers - but has told the Ibrox attacker to stick to the wings.

McKay's impressive contribution for the Light Blues earned him his first ever invite to Gordon Strachan's senior squad.

Gers skipper Lee Wallace has also been included for next month's friendly clashes against Italy and France.

McKay's call-up in particular caps off a remarkable 12 months for the 21-year-old. He looked to be drifting out of the picture at Ibrox when he was farmed out to Raith Rovers on loan last season.

But Warburton spotted his potential after taking over last summer and gave him his chance.

And McKay has not looked back since, making the slot on the left wing his own with 44 starts out of 49 games as Gers clinched promotion back to the top flight.

Warburton has hinted the youngster could have a future playing a more central role - but team-mate Miller believes McKay will fly in the right direction if he remains a winger.

The veteran striker said: "I'm delighted for both lads after their call-ups. There is a lot of lads who have had good seasons this year but Lee and Barrie are getting that recognition.

"It is testament to the work they have put in as individuals and it is great the manager has seen that. They have been outstanding.

"The way we play Barrie has found himself drifting into those central positions a lot. He has started one or two games in the middle but Barrie's strengths are one-on-one.

"He is a creative player and there is no doubt he could play in a number 10 position. He can see a pass and move into positions where he can hurt teams.

"But for me, his strengths are out wide.

"He has pace and directness which means when he gets one-on-one with them he can really hurt them, especially with that turn of speed he's got over that first 10-15 yards. We've seen that all season."

Wallace and McKay got the nod from Strachan for the June international double header but Miller believes there could be a bigger Ibrox contingent when the Scots kick-off their World Cup qualifiers against Malta on September 4.

"If the lads are performing at the top level then there's no reason why not," said the former Dark Blues frontman, who was announcing Rangers Charity Foundation had funded over one million vaccinations for Unicef's vaccination programme.

"There are maybe one or two others who are not too far away.

"But we need to be showing these kind of individual performances again next season when we're back in the top division if we're going to be having people regularly in that Scotland squad."

Gers still have business this season to attend to, however.

They take on Hibernian a week on Saturday in the final of the William Hill Scottish Cup and having reflected upon his own experience, Miller is expecting a closely-fought battle.

The 36-year-old has won three finals at Hampden - one with Celtic and two with the Ibrox outfit - but all three games have been settled by a 1-0 scoreline.

"I've had some good memories," he said. "I've been fortunate enough that I've only lost one cup final, the 2009 League Cup final.

"We got beat 2-0 after extra time by Celtic but that's the only defeat I've had in a final.

"I've been fortunate enough to have won a few though.

"Some of those finals I've been involved in have been really tight affairs. I think back to the St Mirren in the League Cup final 2010 when we were down to nine men and Falkirk the year before in the Scottish Cup. Both those games ended 1-0.

"It's a cup final and they are always tight games no matter who the opposition is, so I'm sure next Saturday's will no different."
