Hibs begin search for new manager after Stubbs exit

Hibernian have launched their hunt for a new manager after reaching a settlement deal with Rotherham for Alan Stubbs.

The Englishman quit the Easter Road outfit on Wednesday, just 11 days after leading them to their first Scottish Cup triumph in 114 years.

Clyde Sport understands Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart has agreed a compensation sum of around £120,000 to secure the services of Stubbs and his number two John Doolan.

But now Hibs chief executive Leeann Dempster is turning her attentions to finding a replacement.

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon is now topping the bookmakers' list of likely candidates, with ex-Wigan and Cardiff manager Malky Mackay, Scotland Under-17 head coach Scot Gemmill and recently-departed Inverness boss John Hughes also in the running.

Dempster said: "Alan and his staff have done a magnificent job, with the pinnacle obviously being that historic Scottish Cup win for which every Hibernian supporter is thankful. We wish them every success in the future.

"The task now at hand for Hibernian is to find a head coach who will lead us back into the Scotland's top flight by winning the Championship this season.

"We expect high calibre candidates, and while we understand there will be a lot of speculation, as ever this club will go about its business quietly and professionally and speak when there is something meaningful to say."

Hibs were desperate not to lose Stubbs so soon after last month's cup triumph over Rangers, but the thought of another season outside Scotland's top flight seems to have made up the mind of the former Celtic and Everton defender.

Now he is looking to start a new project with the Millers.

Stubbs told Sky Sports News: "It's a calculated risk. I believe in my own ability. I believe that with the chairman we can really take the club forward.

"That is what life is all about. This is a fantastic opportunity and a great challenge, but one I fully believe I can achieve in."
