Glasgow City Make History

Glasgow City today made Scottish history, defeating Hibernian 3-1 to win the Scottish Women’s Premier League title for the tenth successive season. City got the ten in a row party started after ten minutes when Hayley Lauder brilliantly turned in the box and fired an inch perfect cross to Sarah Crilly who netted 6 yards out. Lauder was proving extremely influential and hit the cross bar with a shot minutes later before firing two efforts just wide of the target as the half progressed. The visitors had their first chance of the match on 21 minutes when a long run from Abigail Harrison saw her shoot just past the post and Cheryl McCulloch did well to block an effort from Hibs striker Caroline Heron in the City 6 yard box. On the stroke of half time, City made it 2-0. Leanne Ross played a corner to Fiona Brown and she crossed for defender Savannah McCarthy to climb highest and put her header past Jenna Fife in the Hibs nets. It was a lead City thoroughly deserved at that point, after an excellent first half performance. At the start of the second half, City had further chances to score with shots from distance from Jo Love and Sarah Crilly all failing to find the target, before Gemma Fay was called into action in goals for City, saving well from Caroline Heron. Mid way through the second half, City made it 3-0. Good play by Clare Shine saw the Irish striker set up Hayley Lauder, whose effort cracked back off the post and fell kindly for Shine who volleyed home the rebound. With seven minutes remaining, Siobhan Hunter netted for Hibernian after Fay struggled to deal with her long range effort, which squirmed out of her hands and bounced over the line. Commenting on the ten in a row achievement, Head Coach Scott Booth said, “This is a massive accomplishment for the club. The amount of people who have been involved in ten in a row is incredible and something so many great people have made happen, from players to all the staff behind the scenes, both now and in the past. For me, I am delighted to be a part of it. There was huge pressure on us this season given the significance of what we could do, but these players continue to rise to every occasion and I am very proud of everyone.” Glasgow City will be officially presented with the SWPL trophy next Sunday after their league match against Rangers which is a 1pm kick off at Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie.
