Administrators are at the site of Aberdeen's last remaining paper mill where the future of 500-workers is uncertain.

Stoneywood continues to trade while representatives try to find a buyer for the firm affected by "rising costs and difficult trading conditions.

There had been plans to sell the business to Dutch firm Fineska, but that deal fell through over Christmas.

Now parent company Sequana have confirmed the operators of the mill are in administration, and efforts will be made to secure a new buyer.

Aberdeen Donside MSP Mark McDonald hopes the Scottish Government can help. He told Northsound News: "We've seen other major employers facing significant difficulties around Scotland, and the Scottish Government have stepped up to try and help secure the future of those businesses.

"I would hope that the same would be true in relation to Stoneywood paper mill which is a proud business with a long heritage in the city of Aberdeen."

Tommy Campbell, Unite industrial officer, added: "This is an anxious time for staff at the plant, and for the local economy of the North-East.

"Stoneywood has been a very successful business for almost 250-years, and these workers and their families deserve a future after contributing the most into making this site a profitable and continuous success for generations."

Administrators say they will continue trading at Stoneywood while looking at all options to secure the future of the mill, and the livelihoods of almost 500 workers.

Joint administrator Iain Fraser, partner with FRP Advisory said: "The Stoneywood Mill in Aberdeen has a long tradition and reputation for producing fine and creative papers of the very highest quality for a global customer base.

"Unfortunately, the business has been severely affected by rising costs and difficult trading conditions, and the insolvency proceedings begun in France left the directors no option but to place the UK companies in administration.

"We will continue to trade the business whilst exploring all options for securing a future for the site."
