Troon man raising money to rebuild house destroyed by hurricane

The man from Troon moved to the British Virgin Islands 6 years ago but Hurricane Irma has destroyed it.

A Troon man's been left heartbroken at the devastation Hurricane Irma has left on the Caribbean island he has called home for the last 6 years.

Tommy Gaunt teaches kite surfing on the British Virgin Island of Anegada which was wiped out just over a week ago by the storm.

He says there's no electricity and little food left on the British Virgin Island which has a population of just 2-hundred and 50 people.

He'd flown home before it hit but is now raising thousands of pounds to help rebuild the island..

The area is not out of trouble yet as they face being lashed by another hurricane.

Hurricane Maria is gathering strength as it heads towards the Lesser Antilles, prompting alerts for the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla that lie to the west.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is advising against all travel to the British Virgin Islands as Maria is expected to make landfall tomorrow.
