The decision to close the Beach Leisure Centre swimming pool "needs reversed", says Scottish Conservative Group Leader Ryan Houghton.

It was announced on Tuesday that the leisure pool would close after the summer holidays, "towards the end of August".

Sport Aberdeen Managing Director Alistair Robertson blamed it on "unprecedented and unsustainable rises in energy costs".

However, Mr Houghton admitted that he was shocked by the decision to close it.

"This has come out of the blue and there was no prior indication that this was going to be happening.

"We've (the former council administration) left them millions of pounds in surpluses - l'll be speaking with parties across the council to see if we can maybe do something to avoid this decision.

"I'll be honest, when the council administration changed hands my kind of take was to give them time to bed in.

"It's a huge role to undertake but they do have some experienced people in there.

"We'll need to speak to Sport Aberdeen and find out the depth of issue but on its face, it looks like a completely avoidable decision, which might mean the council stepped in and uses some of its own resources."
