Stop Cambo: "We cannot let new fossil fuel projects go ahead"
Lauren MacDonald from the Stop Cambo campaign group says urgent action is needed
The Stop Cambo campaign group have warned that continued oil exploration will mean "total extinction" by the end of the century.
Siccar Point Energy, together with Shell, had paused plans to develop the Cambo oil field, off the west coast of Shetland.
However, Ithaca Energy became the major stakeholder for the controversial project after acquiring Siccar Point in a deal worth £1.1 billion.
Stop Cambo have been voicing their concerns with spokesperson Lauren MacDonald saying she is "terrified" for the future.
"We're on track for 3.2 degrees of warming by the end of the century.
"And that number might seem small, but 3.2 degrees of warming will mean pretty much total extinction.
"The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which is the leading scientific body on the impacts of climate change, has told us that if we make deep fast cuts to emissions now, then we will have a good chance of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees.
"If we're to have any shot at safe, livable future, that's the key threshold that we that we want to keep to.
"But that's not something that can happen overnight and we need a managed fair phase out of fossil fuels.
"So what is completely incongruent with that is opening up a massive oil field in the North Sea."
