The North East is set to be hit with snow and ice until Wednesday as forecasters have issued a fresh yellow warning.

It's as the region woke up to wintry showers on Monday morning in the first cold snap to hit the UK this season.

The Met Office warning begins at 4pm today (Monday 18 November) and is due to last until 10am on Wednesday 20 November.

Snow and hail will become heavier and more frequent on Monday night, through much of Tuesday and then overnight into Wednesday morning.

2 to 5cm of snow is likely to accumulate quite widely, with the possibility of up to 10cm in some places by the end of Tuesday.

Up to 20cm could accumulate on land above 300 metres.

Forecasters are warning the snowy, wintry weather can make driving conditions dangerous and motorists should plan, check for delays and amend their journey if necessary.
