Six people have been seriously injured in a car crash on the A90 at the Toll of Birness - and two of them have life threatening injuries.

The two vehicle accident happened at about 6 o'clock yesterday evening.

It involved a white Peugeot 207 and a silver Volkswagen Passat.

The police say the women passenger in the Volkswagen is in a critical condition, and the young woman sitting in the front passenger seat of the other car is fighting for her life

The 18-year-old female driver of the Peugeot and the rear seat passengers, two males both aged 18, also sustained serious but not life threatening injuries.

Sergeant Peter Henderson of the Road Policing Department said, "Our thoughts at this difficult time are with those involved and their families. An Investigation into the collision is underway. In order to help establish what happened, I would urge anyone who may have seen either of the vehicles prior to the collision, or who saw the incident and has not yet come forward, to contact Police on 101 as soon as possible."

The road was closed for several hours but it has now been re-opened.
