A bomb disposal team have removed what is thought to be an old wartime device, after it was found by a novice detectorist
Concerns were raised last night after Ryan Junor discovered the unexploded ordnance while out on a search in Invergordon with his son and friends.
Nearby houses and shops were evacuated as a precaution.
A 300m area surrounding Invergordon academy and local Rugby club was cordoned off to ensure the ordnance could be dealt with safely.
Police say there was no wider threat to the public.
Bomb find "pretty mad"
Earlier this morning, the public were urged to stay away from the area surrounding the academy.
Invergordon Academy, Park Primary School and nursery, and South Lodge Primary and nursery were closed for the day while emergency services dealt with the incident.
Speaking to us earlier today, Alness dad Ryan said the find was "pretty mad."
He said: "I was out for breakfast with a couple of pals and one of them said he was getting into after finding an army badge, so I just bought a detector - plus my son is into artifacts and things like that.
"I mean to start off with we just thought it was a bit of copper pipe, had we known what it was we wouldn't have been putting shovels down around it!"
Around 3pm, Police Scotland issued an update on the incident.
A spokesperson said: "Emergency services attended at Castle Terrace in Invergordon after an unexploded ordnance was found. A cordon was put in place, and several houses and shops were evacuated as a precaution.
"Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended and removed the item.
"The cordon has been lifted, and the roads have now re-opened. There was no wider threat to the public.
"Thanks to the public for their patience."
