Breaking: Willie Rennie steps down as Scottish Lib Dem Leader

Willie Rennie is stepping down as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats.
He announced the decision on Twitter this afternoon, posting a video.
"After eleven elections and referendums over ten years and a global pandemic, I have decided to stand aside as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats" he said.
"I have always believed that politics can be a vehicle to tackle big issues and transform the lives of people we are elected to serve.
"That's why under my leadership we have championed the case for better mental health services, world class schools and investment for early years education."
Rennie concluded his video with:
"The new Leader will have my full support, writing the new bright chapter for the Scottish Liberal Democrats story.
"To the people of North East Fife, thank you for re-electing me in May. I will continue to work for you."
Reaction:
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon sent Rennie her best wishes, saying:
"Despite our political disagreements, I've always respected his commitment and decency. Political leadership takes its toll and, after 10 years at the helm of his party, I'm sure he is looking forward to new challenges."
Ed Davey, the Leader of the UK branch of the party said:
"From banging the drum on mental health and education to those amazing photo-ops, Willie Rennie has been a fantastic Leader, he is the best of us. Delighted he is sticking around as an MSP. Our party need him."
Deputy leader Alistair Carmichael said:
“I’m really sorry that Willie Rennie has decided to call it a day as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats but after 11 years of some of the most frantic politics that Scotland has ever know I can understand why he feels that this is the moment to move on.
“Willie has been a leader of incredible positivity, energy and dedication. The party could not have asked of more from their leader than he has given. I know that he will continue to serve both his constituents and the Liberal Democrats in the Scottish Parliament in the same way, whatever job he has.”
