A Reclaim the Night demonstration is to descend on the streets of the Granite City on Saturday night to call for safer streets.

The march marks the beginning of 16 globally-recognised days of activism against gender-based violence.

Aberdeen Women's Alliance member Councillor Sandra Macdonald says they hope to send a message that they're going to "keep fighting" for the right to walk safely on the streets of Aberdeen.

She said: "I think it's a real signal to everyone in society that women are still unhappy about how they can't go about their business in an evening safely. That women still feel they are threatened when they go out at night.

"I think it's absolutely key that all organisations, women and men come together to say enough is enough - this needs to stop. We need to change society and we need to put mitigating measures that allow women to go about what they want to do, day or night."

The march will begin at St Nicholas Street and make its way to Union Terrace Gardens as the Aberdeen Women's Alliance lead the crowd down the Granite Mile.

Marischal College will be illuminated in orange lights to raise awareness of violence against women.

Cllr Macdonald continued: "I think it is a basic right to walk alone at night without fear of harassment or fear of attack.

"As a young women, a middle aged woman, an older woman, we all feel at some time unsafe. I think we do have coping mechanisms that we use but i think it is incumbent upon society to make sure that everybody feels safe when they're out at night."
