Aberdeen have appointed former player Stephen Glass as their new manager.

The 1995 'Coca Cola Cup' winner joins from the Dons affiliate club Atlanta United in the MLS.

Craig Brown knows what it's like to be in the hot seat at Pittodrie, he told our Sports Editor Dave Galloway he was "not surprised to hear the news"

"I think it's a very ambitious appointment" the former Scotland boss said.

He also suggested that the success of the previously relatively inexperienced Steven Gerrard at Rangers this season could have helped Glass in convincing the Pittodrie board he's got what it takes.

Continuing Brown said:

"I wouldn't be surprised to see Stephen do the same for Aberdeen.

"I don't know what he's like as a coach, but I know him as a player, I know him as a person - he is an outstanding individual, a really nice guy."

Opinion is mixed on the new gaffer on social media, but Fans group Dons Supporters Together hope the fanbase unite in support of the new manager.

Steve Wilson told Northsound:

"He's an ex Aberdeen player, he knows the club, the fans should get behind him and I hope they do"

He continued "It's now a time to come together."

In the announcement Chairman Dave Cormack commented that he believed his new man would bring attractive football to Aberdeen.

Wilson says that's high on the priority list for supporters:

"The last while under Derek (McInnes) it was sore to watch and the fans are needing something to bring them back to the stadium - excited them."

"We want to see nice flowing attacking football, but at the same time tight at the back."

Glass has been managing Atlanta United's B team, and had a stint as caretaker.

“We can’t thank Stephen enough for his contributions to the club,” Atlanta United President Darren Eales said.

“For the past three seasons, he has played a crucial role in the development of players across all levels of the club, from Academy to First Team. Stephen will undoubtedly be missed, but we are excited for his opportunity to lead the club where he made his professional debut.”

Some details of the deal are yet unknown, Glass has not yet arrived in the Granite City, but he has some time to make the trip before the Dons next game as we enter an international break.

It's also as yet unconfirmed the length of the contract for the manager, and who will be part of his backroom staff.
