King Charles III will lead a procession to St Giles' Cathedral today

King Charles III will lead the royal family in a poignant procession behind the coffin of his mother when it travels to St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh to allow the public to pay their respects.
The Queen will be taken from the Palace of Holyroodhouse - where she arrived by road from Balmoral - to the Cathedral where her family, and a congregation drawn from all areas of Scottish society, will attend a service of thanksgiving for her life.
Charles will lead some of the royals on foot, expected to be the Duke of York, Earl of Wessex, Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence - while the Queen Consort and other members of the monarchy will follow in cars.
Lying at Rest
Her Majesty The Queen will lie at Rest at St Giles’ Cathedral before the journey to London on Tuesday where it will lie-in-state in Westminster Abbey before the funeral on Monday 19th September.
Mourners will be able to file past the coffin from around 5:30pm on Monday 12 September until 3pm on Tuesday 13 September.
There will be queuing system and we are being warned it is likely to involve standing for a number of hours and we should be prepared to be outside in all weather conditions.
The queue will start at George Square Lane/North Meadow Walk in The Meadows, Edinburgh where one wristband per person will be issued
No stopping and no photographs
There will be security checked before entering St Giles’ photography and recording is not permitted inside.
Mourners will be asked to pass the coffin without pausing, to enable as many people as possible to do so. Once people have paid their respects, they are asked to move away from the exits to allow the queue to keep flowing.
Later in the evening, the King and other members of his family, likely his siblings, will mount a vigil at the cathedral in honour of their mother.
Procession from Holryoodhouse
The procession with Her Majesty’s coffin will leave the Palace of Holyroodhouse at 14.35 for the journey to St Giles’ Cathedral.
It will be flanked by The King’s Bodyguard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers) and the Guard of Honour.
Minute guns will be fired as the Procession makes its way up the Royal Mile. The last round will fire as the Hearse stops outside St Giles’ Cathedral.
A service to celebrate the life of The Queen and her connection to Scotland will begin at 15.00
Those represented will include members of the public, friends, family members and representatives from the charities and organisations The Queen was affiliated to in Scotland.
The service will be led by the Reverend Calum MacLeod.
