The historic Port of Aberdeen, which dates back to 1136, is now Scotland's largest port following the completion of the Aberdeen South Harbour expansion project.

The £420m operation, the UK's largest marine infrastructure project, will be officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal in September.

The now fully operation south harbour means the port has a total of 8km of quayside is available at the port, making it the country's largest berthage port.

The new south harbour accounts for around 1.5km of the overall quayside and can host ships up to 300m in length, with its first cruise calls taking place earlier this year.

Supporting Aberdeen

The new harbour has been operational for more than a year. The phased opening began in July 2022, attracting longer, deeper and wider vessels.

Regular activity at the port for more than 12 months has supported local jobs and attracted local supply chain spend and investment.

Profits have been reinvested into the port with improved facilities set to benefit generations to come.

Bob Sanguinetti, CEO, Port of Aberdeen said: "This is a momentous milestone for Port of Aberdeen, as the UK’s oldest business completes construction of the country’s newest harbour.

"This achievement reflects the dedication and determination of everyone involved in the project from concept to construction and now completion.

"The expanded Port of Aberdeen will play a pivotal role in supporting energy, trade and tourism growth across the region, and Scotland more widely, while supporting increased jobs and investment for decades to come.

"The official opening is fast approaching and we’re delighted that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal is joining us for the occasion. Tickets are now also available for our free public event and we look forward to welcoming everyone to see this transformational development first hand."
