Fire crews were alerted to a smoke alarm sounding at a property on Mile End Avenue in Midstocket at around 5.10pm on Wednesday.
Officers entered the flat and extinguished a small kitchen fire but also found the body of an elderly woman.
No one else was in the property and no neighbouring homes were affected.
