Oldmachar Academy will be closed to all pupils today after confirming a positive case of covid-19 at the secondary.

They hope to open their doors again on Monday.

A letter sent to parents said the clean was simply precautionary, and at this stage they did not believe any transmission took place at school.

NHS Grampian confirmed the case, a spokeswoman said:

"We are investigating a single case of COVID-19 linked with Oldmachar Academy in Aberdeen. We are in the process of identifying close contacts and advising them to self isolate. Further investigations are underway; the school will be closed tomorrow (Friday 21 August) for cleaning as a precaution."

Northsound has been speaking to a local parent - whose child attends Bridge of Don Academy, not Oldmachar.

The Mum told us she has heard similar stories to those her kids have told her from parents with children at various city schools.

She has asked to remain anonymous.

She said:

"I feel that the school lied to us, we were told there would be staggered break and lunch times, that's not happening."

"My son has disclosed to me that there is no social distancing at all in the class room or when changing classrooms."

"They've got parents, grandparents etc who are high risk"

"Even at lunch time they are in groups, they go to the local shops and are in mass crowds."

An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “We work in keeping with Scottish Government guidance and physical distancing is promoted in our secondary schools. If children wish to wear face coverings in schools, they will be supported in doing so.

“Arrangements are already in place to stagger the start of break and lunch at Bridge of Don Academy and the senior leadership team are currently reviewing arrangements after the first week and plan to further increase separation next week.

“The lunchtime arrangements for Bridge of Don Academy will be remain, in keeping with best health and safety practice.

“All arrangements will continue to be kept under review.”
