Unions have highlighted a scam being aimed at desperate job hunting oil and gas workers.

It's thought that phony companies are luring in those looking for jobs by offering them high paid overseas work.

Tommy Campbell from UNITE say's it's vital to check that any offers are genuine before signing up.

He said: "We are warning our members to be extra vigilant of these scams which prey on the fear and uncertainty across the North Sea because of the oil price crisis.

"The major firms do warn their employees and the general public about fraudulent communications but it would do no harm for the industry to ramp-up further awareness for the sake of workers who are worrying about their futures or looking for new employment having lost their jobs.

"Over 70,000 jobs across the UK oil and gas sector have now gone since the turn of 2015 and the recent raft of profit warnings and decommissioning projections suggest we are far from out of the woods; the environment could get even more difficult so the industry must clamp down as best it can on exploitative scams."
