A planned strike by workers on North Sea oil rigs has been called off to allow talks to be held.

Members of the Unite union on three platforms operated by Total were due to walk out on September 3 in a dispute over rotas.

Workers on the Elgin, Alwyn and Dunbar platforms have held several strikes in protest at plans for a three weeks on and three weeks off rota.

Unite said it will suspend the September 3 strike as a “gesture of goodwill” to provide a more constructive and positive environment for the talks, which will be held at the conciliation service Acas.

A spokesperson for Total said:

“Following the breakdown of talks last week, Total E&P UK welcomes Unite’s agreement to now bring in ACAS and suspend industrial action offshore. This is a constructive step forward and we look forward to renewed talks to help resolve this dispute."
