A panel of North East LGBT speakers are to come together today (May 17) to mark the international day against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.

The Idahobit event will be hosted by Unison's North East LGBT+ group's Deirdre MacDonald.

She told Northsound:

"We are very lucky in this country to have a lot of legislation like the equality act from 2010, to back us up when we are challenging discrimination."

"But there are a lot of countries around the world where that is not the case, so the more that we promote the whole idea of this then the more it helps people in other countries as well."

"Still to this day there are 37 countries where homosexual acts are illegal."

Speakers at the event include Deejay Bullock who is founder of 'Four Pillars' and Scott Rennie, the first openly gay minister in the Church of Scotland.

The day is to be marked by more than 132 countries across the globe.
