Police Scotland say road blocks and Police patrols with the purpose of stopping people breaking Covid travel rules are not being utilised.

It had been speculated on social media that Police in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire had been patrolling the local area in order to find people breaking the rules.

Police say that while officers may speak to members of the public about regulations during their regular duties, they are not setting up road blocks or stopping cars with this purpose.

Inspector Neil Morrison, Road Policing Unit, said: "The Chief Constable has made it clear that officers will not be establishing check points or road blocks simply to enforce travel restrictions.

"We have increased patrols in our communities to explain the regulations and to encourage people to do the right thing.

"Our approach throughout the pandemic has not changed. Police Scotland officers will continue to support people to follow the regulations and encourage them to take personal responsibility.

"People should not leave their homes unless for essential purposes. The best way to stay safe is to stay at home.

"Where officers encounter wilful breaches they will act decisively to enforce the law."
