A local business, who wish to remain anonymous, has donated a £200,000 to North East Scotland College to go towards a new energy transition training hub.
The funding will transform an area of NESCol's Fraserburgh campus, supporting the the expansion of existing programmes, including offshore wind technician training.
The new training hub will re-skill existing employees in the industry as well as offering new opportunities for students across the north east, according to Principal of NESCol Neil Cowie.
"This new avenue of funding will enable us to construct a purpose built workshop aimed at providing skills based, electrical and chemical engineering programs for students and school pupils who have ambitions to work in the renewable sector.
"I think the facilities will also offer the opportunity in modern apprentices and industry employees to routinely upskill and re-skill as and when the demands of the energy sector arise and evolve."
An impossibility becomes a reality
It's the second time that the business has given to the college, following a £100,000 donation made in 2020 which led to the creation of the Future Skills Zone, driving education technology focused areas, such as 3D printing and robotics.
"In a very challenging financial environment for the college and the wider college sector, this extremely generous contribution has turned a project that would have been an impossibility into a much welcomed reality", added Cowie.
"This incredibly generous donation is a wonderful demonstration of the support that exists for NESCol, and particularly in this case, of a determination to ensure exciting opportunities and emerging industries can be embraced.
"The college has a crucial part to play in the region's ambitions for energy transition and environmental sustainability, and these funds will undoubtedly help us to fulfill these goals."
