A local MSP is calling on people across the North East with disabilities to sign up to the Scottish and Southern Electricity priority list for help in the event of the lights going out this winter.

Aberdeen Central MSP Kevin Stewart voiced his concerns today as Aberdonians set out for last minute Christmas shopping on Friday morning amidst high winds in the city.

He said: “Power cuts are this time of year can be a real pain, but many of us can cope by lighting a few candles and reading a book.

"For some folk though losing electricity in the home can be a terribly frightening experience and could leave them feeling vulnerable and at risk.

“The Priority Services Register means people who are disabled; have chronic illnesses; have special communication needs; care for young babies; or are pensioners receive support first to help them cope.

"This could make a massive difference to someone who may rely on electrical power to keep themselves healthy in the winter months.

“I want to urge all of my constituents and folk across the North-East to sign up to this service if they need it, but to also consider if you have a friend or relative who may benefit from it and get them to register as soon as possible.”
