Midwives hold vigil in Aberdeen
Dozens turned out to the city Castlegate to support midwives as they look to raise awareness of a 'maternity crisis'
Dozens of people have turned out in Aberdeen to support midwives, as well as other healthcare workers and families, as part of a vigil over the current 'maternity crisis'.
Over 50 of these similar events are taking place across the UK today (Sunday November 21).
A recent Royal College of Midwives’ survey of midwives found 60% of staff are thinking of leaving the profession and for every 30 newly qualified midwives, 29 are leaving.
Professionals say they are deeply concerned about this, and are looking to be included in discussions on how to help improve working conditions.
Midwives at the Aberdeen event admitted pay isn't a primary concern.
They also pointed out that whilst fellow professionals in England are highlighting issues for students, they say many of those do not apply in Scotland.

Part of the demands being made is for self employed midwives to be able to work.
They also want Million of pounds worth of funding invested in third sectors organisations for the provision of breastfeeding support and antenatal education to reduce the pressure on staff.
Also, making working hours more flexible is a key ask from the group.
