Drivers venturing onto the roads for the first time after New Year are being warned about icy conditions all across Scotland.

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for icy conditions which covers the whole country.

The warning is in force from 18.00 on Sunday 1st Jan to 11.00 on Tuesday 2nd January.

Local councils and the trunk road maintenance contractors say they will have a fleet of gritters treating priority routes during the night, but motorists are being advised to drive with caution on side roads and minor routes.

Most of Scotland was covered by a yellow warning for snow on New Year's Day with Traffic Scotland tweeting images of conditions on the A9 between Perth and Inverness.
