Families met at the Kirk of St Nicholas yesterday

A message of support has been given to families affected by the baby ashes scandal at a special memorial service.

Those who never got the ashes of their loved ones back from Hazlehead met at the Kirk of St Nicholas yesterday.

The service, led by Rev Hugh Wallace, involved readings, prayers, singing and an opportunity to light a candle in a meditation led by Rev Stephen Taylor, and a reflection given by Rev Dr John McNeill.

Rev Wallace said: "We are committed to supporting all those affected and the service was an important part of that. We welcomed all who wished to take part but recognise everyone has their own needs at this sad time and our work with the families will continue.

“We appreciated that not everyone would feel that the service would be the best place for them today, so we are still available at any time for those who may wish to contact us."

Aberdeen City Council Chief Executive Angela Scott, who spoke at the service, attended along with the Lord Provost of Aberdeen George Adam.
