Aberdeen City Council have taken over control of the former BHS site on Union Street, and disused indoor market.

Earlier this year the Council lodged plans with Officers to buy the two buildings, in order to transform them into a new shopping and hospitality site.

The development would contain "Continued retail use at Union Street level and a mix of retail, food and drink and leisure use at Hadden Street level."

Also mentioned in the report is "Removal of vehicular traffic from the section of Union Street between Bridge Street and the Castlegate"

Councillor Ryan Houghton who is convener for the City growth and resources committee has confirmed the progress to Northsound.

He told us:

"The Council has concluded the purchase with the previous owner of the site, and has now effectively taken keys, as it were, for the former BHS and market site.

"Officers will be bringing forward proposals to my committee on the 25th of August.

"Setting out plans about what the future of the site might be, what we might be looking to do with it."

On the potential for the redevelopment to make improvements to the city centre, Houghton said:

"This investment and taking control of such a large footprint in the city centre and turning it into something that gives Union Street a beating heart again is absolutely crucial."

The investment is part of a £150 Million budget for re-inventing the city centre and beachfront, as part of the Council's 'masterplan'.
