A man has appeared in court charged with murder following a death at an Indian takeaway in Aberdeenshire.

Police said Shahzad Shah, 56, collapsed and died at Mirchi Tandoori in the Aberdeenshire village of Mintlaw following an "incident" on Monday night.

Hidayet Ozden, 52, appeared in private at Peterhead Sheriff Court charged with murder and assault following Mr Shah's sudden death.

Paramedics were called to the restaurant in the village's main square shortly after 5:30pm but there was nothing they could do to save him.

Detectives investigating the sudden death described it as "suspicious".

Officers remained outside the building, which was cordoned off with police tape, all day on Tuesday.

All of the windows and the glass panels on the front door were also covered up.

Police said a man had been charged late on Tuesday night.

Ozden, who is from the Falkirk area, made no plea and no declaration during yesterday's court appearance.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court again next week.
