A man's been charged over an alleged street attack in the heart of Aberdeen - as a man fights for his life in hospital.

The 33-year-old was found with serious head injuries outside the Co-op on Union Street shortly after nine o'clock last night.

A 27-year-old will appear at the city's Sheriff Court tomorrow in connection.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Rhona Di Meola said: "Thank you to the members of the public who assisted with this inquiry. I would also like to stress that this was a contained and isolated incident and that at no stage was there any threat to the wider public."

She added: "I would still encourage anyone who was in the area around the time in question, in particular between 9.25pm and 9.55pm, to please contact Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 anonymously if you think you have information which could help."
