An arrest has been made over an attack which left a man is in a critical condition in hospital.

The 28-year-old suffered serious injuries after he was assaulted by two men in Union Street, in the centre of Aberdeen, at about 5.30am on Saturday.

He was taken to the city's Royal Infirmary, where his condition is described as critical.

Police have arrested a 28-year-old man over the incident but said inquiries are continuing to trace the second man.

A report has been sent to the procurator fiscal and the arrested man is expected to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

The city centre street was closed for part of Saturday and Detective Inspector Norman Stevenson said: “It was necessary as part of our investigation to close a small section of Union Street and I fully recognise the disruption this caused to some businesses and the general public frequenting the area.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank those affected for their patience whilst we carried out this necessary work.”

Around 12 hours earlier, a man was punched in the face and struck on the head in a row after a disturbance on a bus.

The incident happened in Edinburgh city centre at around 5pm on Friday.

Police said the 27-year-old victim was on a number three Lothian Bus travelling east along Princes Street when another man started to cause a disturbance.

A number of people told him to calm down but an “altercation” between the two men ensued after they got off the bus at the same stop, outside the Apple store.

The victim was punched in the face before members of the public intervened.

He then walked up Waterloo Place towards Regent Road and was struck on his head from behind. When he turned round, he realised that the same man was responsible.

The suspect then ran off up the steps towards Calton Hill, police said.

Anyone who can help police identify him is being urged to come forward.

The suspect is described as black, in his early 20s, 5ft 11in with a slim build. He was wearing a white baseball cap with a red brim and a white top with blue diagonal stripes on the shoulders.

Police in the east of the country are also appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Woodburn, Midlothian.

A 36-year-old man suffered a number of cuts to his arm and back, as well as an injury to his ear, in the attack. He was treated by ambulance staff but declined hospital treatment.

The incident happened around 4.50pm on Friday in the Allan Terrace area.
