A man has been jailed for seven years for raping a woman in an Aberdeen churchyard.

Police were called to the church grounds on St Clement Street in the early hours of Sunday 15 May 2022 following reports of a serious sexual assault.

Sean Alexander Wyness appeared at the High Court in Aberdeen today (Friday 29 November) where he was sentenced.

Detective Inspector Ryan Morris said: “Wyness will now face the consequences of his despicable actions in prison.

“I would like to commend the woman for her strength in coming forward during the investigation and I hope today’s sentencing brings her some sense of closure and helps her move on from this traumatic ordeal.

“We would encourage anyone who has experienced any form of violent or sexual offence, regardless of when it happened, to report it to us. We will investigate thoroughly and have specially trained officers and partner agencies who will support you throughout.”
