Listen: North East fishermen look to leave the EU

Why do they feel so strongly towards brexit?

It's the last day of campaigning before the EU referendum where the British people will decide whether they would like to remain or leave.

Most of the polls indicate that it is going to be an incredibly close result, with many people still undecided just 24 hours before the vote.

In the North East, it's fishermen who have expressed the greatest desire for brexit.

A University of Aberdeen survey found that 92% of those working on fishing vessels would be voting to leave the European Union.

Former Skipper Jimmy Buchan worked on boats all of his working life - he's backing the Vote Leave campaign.

Fishing For Leave claim that EU restrictions on quotas and a 200nm limit means they are being held back by Brussels.

They say that: "60% of the British fleet has been deliberately scrapped under government programmes whilst other countries have built boats with EU grants to fish our waters."

Stronger In Europe say that leaving the European Union would risk job security and would damage the British economy.

Charles Buchan is a local councillor for Fraserburgh, one of Scotland's most prolific fishing ports.

He's backing a vote to remain as he feels the situation could become even worse if we leave the European Union.
