LISTEN: Aberdeen University Researchers Make Breakthrough In Terminal Childhood Disease
Researchers at Aberdeen University have made a major breakthrough in discovering what may cause deadly motor neurone disease in children.
The disease in the biggest inherited killer in infants across the world - and affects one in 6,000 live births.
It means children fail to reach regular milestones such as sitting unaided. In the most severe cases, children don't live past three years old.
But a team of scientists at Aberdeen University have discovered that the condition may be linked to low blood supply.
This will lead to a new avenue of research and the development of potential therapies.
Our reporter Hope Webb sat down with Professor Simon Parson, who has been leading the research for ten years now.
