LISTEN: 82-Year-old Yachtsman Rescued From North Sea Speaks To Northsound News

Published 8th Oct 2015

An 82-year old man who was rescued after his yacht became stranded in the middle of the North Sea, has spoken to Northsound News about his terrifying experience.

Julien Mustoe was sailing the 'Harrier of Down', 95 miles from Shetland, when a mechanical fault struck the boat at around 9pm on Tuesday night.

He sent out a distress call, and two Shetland Coastguard helicopters were scrambled to rescue him - but he refused to be airlifted as he didn't want to abandon his vessel.

He was left drifting towards a Total gas platform for twelve to fifeteen hours, before being rescued by the Norweigan Coastguard, who reached him by a tow line.

But once onboard, his yacht began to take on water, and sunk.

Our reporter Hope Webb got the chance to speak to Mr Mustoe over the phone, while he recovered on board the Norweigan Coastguard vessel.
