Homes are flooded, roads closed and schools shut.

The North East has been hit by severe flooding - worst affected are Kintore and the Port Elphinstone area of Inverurie.

The River Don's burst its banks in a number of places - and it could get worse, as the river's expected to peak this morning.

Dozens of families have already had to leave their homes – there’s been evacuations in Ellon, and people in Grandholm in Aberdeen have also been urged to consider leaving.

There are rest centres at Inverurie Academy, Kintore Community Hall, Mackie Academy in Stonehaven, the Linden Centre in Huntly, Marykirk Primary and Bridge of Don Academy.

On the roads there's chaos this morning with many routes closed because of the weather - including the A90 both directions just south of Peterhead, and North Deeside Road in Cults.

The following roads are currently closed.

  • B977 Fintray - Kintore - B974 Banchory-Fettercairn, flooding on the low section south of Strachan Bridge - B976 Ballater-Banchory, South Deeside Road at Inchmarnoch Bridge due to damage. - The road is closed between the B968 junction from Aboyne west to Ballater - closed to allow for emergency repair - B976 between Dinnet Bridge and Aboyne Bridge - closed to allow for emergency repair - B979 between Hatton of Fintray and Blackburn - B993 between Inverurie and Whiterashes - B9005 Methlick to Ythanbank - B974 between Marykirk and the A90 - B9170 Inverurie to Oldmeldrum, near to Portstown Farm - A939 Cockbridge to Tomintoul, snow gates closed at Tomintoul side, Cockbridge side not accessible due to flooding - A920 Huntly to Dufftown, at Dummuir turnoff, following a landslip - B9119 Crossroads to Ordie, Tarland, at Leys between Tarland and Ordie - B979 Westhill to Peterculter, impassable due to significant localised flooding - B9170 Inverurie-Oldmeldrum at Oldmeldrum bypass - B9077 South Deeside Road, west of Leggart Terrace - A947 Fyvie to Turriff, at Fyvie Castle - A952 Cortes-New Leeds - B992 Insch to A96 - A948 Auchnagatt-Ellon, near to Mill of Elrick - A90 Aberdeen-Balmedie, north of Murcar roundabout - northbound A90 is CLOSED beyond the Murcar roundabout - A975 Newburgh - A93 Cults-Peterculter (North Deeside Road), at Pitfodels - A90 Peterhead-Aberdeen, at Boddam - A957 Crathes-Stonehaven, Slug Road

Police Scotland are advising that there is a HIGH RISK OF DISRUPTION and advising caution on all routes due to surface water and flooding, particularly in the Deeside/Donside and the Mearns. Only travel if essential as conditions will remain hazardous as temperatures drop.

The trains are completely off to and from Aberdeen because of water on flooding.

And we've just had an update from the airport - they do have their shorter runway open, but anyone planning to travel should get in touch with their airline before making the journey to the terminal, take of and landing on the shorter runway is at each pilots discretion.
