Winter's taken its 1st serious swipe of the season at the North East, causing chaos on the roads.

The heavy snowfall also forced the closure of some schools - with others opening late.

Principal Roads Engineer for Aberdeenshire Council Natalie Wood she says teams have been working flat out.

She said : "We do have lots of processes in place and a fleet of around 55 gritters, support vehicles and around 300 staff members so we are on the ground when we need to be and doing exactly what we need to be doing to keep the roads moving.

"With this week's weather, we are expected to use a considerable amount of salt. We are actually expecting a boatload of it in tomorrow (around 3,000 tons) and are expecting two more before Christmas just to get us back up to capacity".
