Ten people described as "youngsters" are safe and well after being rescued from the water in Peterhead harbour.

They were in seven dinghies which capsized during "horrendous" conditions caused by high winds yesterday evening.

Among the rescuers who rushed to the scene of the "major" incident were a Fraserburgh lifeboat crew from the RNLI, coastguard personnel, rescue helicopters, ambulance crews, and the police.

A spokesperson for the RNLI team who responded to the Aberdeenshire harbour said: "What started off as a fine, calm summer's afternoon suddenly changed as flash violent storms whipped the seas up and down the coast.

"Experienced members of the crew agreed that it was some of the worst conditions they had seen in all their years at sea."

A spokesperson for the coastguard added: "All the participants were recovered to shore unharmed. It should be noted that all were wearing wet suits and buoyancy aids."
