A former police sergeant has been spared jail after pleading guilty to five counts of sexual assault in Aberdeen and Dundee.

Ross Campbell has instead been sentenced to 18-months of supervised community service and 250 hours of unpaid work.

He groped his victims between September 2019 and February 2020.

Sheriff Graham Buchanan told Mr Campbell: "These offences were thoroughly unpleasant and upsetting for your victims.

"It seems that you are remorseful and regret what you did and, of course, you tendered pleas of guilty which avoided the need for a trial."

The court also heard from defence advocate, Gareth Jones, that Mr Campbell, 44, showed a "high degree of victim empathy".

He has also tendered his resignation from the police, Mr Jones added: "He was a serving police officer for the best part of 17 years without incident.

"His behaviour has cost him his job.

"He advises me that he tendered his resignation yesterday, in recognition that it is no longer tenable for him to serve as a police officer."
