Five people have been rescued from a sinking boat in Scotland.

At around 6:50pm it was reported that a 16ft private vessel with five people on board was taking on water near Ailsa Craig, in worsening sea conditions.

Girvan and Campbeltown lifeboat crews and a coastguard rescue helicopter attended the scene.

The helicopter arrived just before the vessel sank with the Girvan lifeboat arriving as the final casualty was winched from the water.

The casualties were checked over by paramedics and despite being wet and cold they appeared to be healthy and in good spirits and did not require further medical attention.

The coastguard helicopter arrived back in Girvan where it was met by the Girvan coastguard rescue team and Police Scotland.

An RNLI statement said: "Although the vessel was lost, five lives were saved in this instance, another few minutes and it could have been a very different outcome."
